Gurnet Point 25: Sandpiper III

At sea trials, the Sandpiper III's Yanmar 180 hp inboard diesel gave a top speed of 20.6 knots and cruised at 16.5 - 17 knots using 3.5 gallons per hour. The hull's design with a full-length keel provided a very comfortable ride. The bow's flare knocked down the spray, allowing little or no water to hit the windshield or cockpit. The tumblehome aft added to the boat's beauty and sleekness. The large bronze rudder provided very responsive control and the ability to turn the boat in its own length.

Sandpiper III's hull, deck and cabin are molded fiberglass/foam core construction. She features a large open cockpit with custom teak trim and a teak transom seat with cushions and storage underneath. The self-bailing cockpit floor is traditional hand-laid teak. Gunwales and toerails are also teak. A bronze anchor platform with teak trim was constructed to accommodate the easy use of the plow-style anchor. The nav station includes a fully integrated Raynav electronic package as well as the standby Ritchie compass. The helm has hydraulic steering tied to an autopilot.

Down below, she has an enclosed head, v-berth with cushions, and hand-laid teak cabin sole. The owners specified a galley with a single burner stove, traditional icebox and a sink with a brass hand pump.

Polished bronze hardware and oiled teak throughout make the boat a true eye-catcher. And of course she is fitted with a specialty South Shore wooden ship's wheel: 6-spoke 22" traditional teak with holly accents and a polished bronze hub engraved with the boat's name.

The Sandpiper III was launched at the Standish Boatyard in Tiverton, R.I. Coincidentally, this is the same boatyard where Will Frost, the legendary designer and builder of lobsterboats, built boats during the 1940s. The Gurnet Point 25's designer Jamie Lowell is Will Frost's great-grandson.
